The CELBAN Speaking section includes a variety of tasks designed to assess the communication skills required in the nursing profession. The assessment is conducted virtually via Zoom, takes approximately 30–35 minutes, and is audio-recorded for scoring. It consists of three main parts:

1. Introduction and Opening Questions:
   • General introductory questions to establish rapport and ease the candidate into the interview.
2. Role-Playing Scenarios:
   • Candidates act as a nurse while one of the examiners plays the role of a client or patient. Tasks may include:
     • Asking for information.
     • Giving instructions.
     • Providing explanations.
3. Further Questions and Conclusion:
   • This section involves discussing health-related topics, exchanging opinions, and answering follow-up questions. Tasks may include:
     • Telling a story.
     • Reporting an incident.
     • Describing a situation.
     • Presenting comparisons.
     • Explaining problems.
     • Stating and supporting opinions.
     • Convincing someone of something.

Evaluation Criteria

Candidates are assessed on:

• Speech and Fluency: Clear articulation and steady speech tempo.
• Grammar and Vocabulary: Correct use of medical and general English vocabulary.
• Organization: Clarity in presenting main ideas with supporting details.
• Adaptability: Ability to respond appropriately to various scenarios.
• Communication Strategies: Effective use of strategies like asking for clarification or self-correction.
