The Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) is a language proficiency test that assesses the English skills of Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who want to practice nursing in Canada.
By passing the CELBAN, IENs demonstrate that they have the language proficiency necessary to effectively communicate with patients, colleagues, and healthcare providers in the Canadian healthcare system.
Here are a few ways in which the CELBAN prepares IENs for a career as a nurse in Canada:
- Demonstrates language proficiency: By passing the CELBAN, you, as an IEN, demonstrate that you have the language skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, and other healthcare providers in a medical setting. That is fundamentally important!
- Meets regulatory requirements: The CELBAN is a requirement set by many of the regulatory bodies that govern nursing practice in Canada. By passing the CELBAN, you will meet the language proficiency requirement and be able to apply for registration to practice as a nurse in Canada. (NOTE: If you plan to move from one province to another, and have not been required to submit an English score previously, you may be required to do so for the new college of nursing that you are transferring to.)
- Improves employability: Passing the CELBAN demonstrates to potential employers that you have the language proficiency necessary to work effectively in a Canadian healthcare setting, improving their chances of employment. This will fill you and your employer with more confidence in your abilities. You will be able to progress more quickly, getting better shifts and better pay.
- Enhances patient care: Effective communication is critical in providing safe and high-quality patient care. By passing the CELBAN, whether it is required or not, you will demonstrate that you have the language skills necessary to provide clear and accurate information to patients and their families! How much better will you and everyone else feel about that?
Overall, the CELBAN is an important step for IENs who want to practice nursing in Canada. By passing the CELBAN, you demonstrate your language proficiency and are better prepared for a successful career as a nurse in Canada.
Even if your regulatory body does not require the exam, if you lack confidence when you speak, write, listen or read in English, then it is still beneficial for you to prepare for the CELBAN. The difference is that you have less stress when you get the scores!
