Choosing the best tutor for the Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) can be challenging, but there are a few key factors to consider that can help you make the right choice: qualifications, experience, availability, teaching style, and cost.
- Qualifications: Look for a tutor who has a strong background in teaching professional communication skills in Canada and a good understanding of the CELBAN test format and requirements when it comes to the Canadian Language Benchmarks. Consider checking the tutor’s Canadian credentials, such as a teaching certificate or relevant degree, to ensure that they are qualified to help you prepare for the test. (Tutors educated and with experience outside of Canada will not have the requirements needed to prepare you for the CELBAN.)
- Experience: Look for a tutor who has experience working with international students and helping them prepare for language proficiency tests like the CELBAN. Look for references or testimonials from previous students to get a sense of their teaching style and effectiveness.
- Availability: Consider the tutor’s availability, and make sure that you can work with them at a time that is convenient for you. If you’re accessing material, make sure that it is available when you are.
- Teaching style: Look for a tutor who has a teaching style that works well for you. Consider whether you prefer a structured and organized approach or a more flexible and adaptable style. You can also ask the tutor for a sample lesson to get a sense of their teaching style and approach.
- Cost: Finally, consider the cost of the tutoring services and make sure that it is within your budget. Keep in mind that some tutors may offer packages that include multiple lessons, study materials, and other resources that can be more cost-effective than paying for individual lessons.
In summary, choosing the best tutor for the CELBAN requires considering factors such as qualifications, experience, availability, teaching style, and cost. By taking these factors into account, you can find a tutor who can help you prepare for the test and increase your chances of success.

How I help!
- Qualifications With a Master’s in Adult Education, from the University of Alberta, I have been preparing Internationally Educated Nurses from around the world and across Canada since 2009. Where I started teaching face-to-face, I moved to teaching online when I realized that a majority of IENs are not able to attend traditional classes on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Experience You can read testimonials and review student work here on Dear Kim. To see messages written about CELBANPrep University, check out the registration page. You can also explore the e-books, workbooks, and dictionary available internationally on Amazon.
- Availability One of the questions IENs are asked during the student orientation is, “How much time do you have to prepare, and when are you available?” Whether registered as an OPEN student in the Resource Centre (CELBANPrep Silver) or as an ENROLLED student in the Learning Centre (CELBANPrep GOLD), lessons will be delivered based on your individualized learning plan. One-on-one coaching sessions are scheduled once a week, based on your schedule. (1:1 Sold Separately. Limited Availability.)
- Teaching Style The approach at CELBANPrep is combined. While lessons are structured and offered on a regular schedule, one-on-one coaching sessions are more flexible and adaptable. Sample lessons are available through the links above, CELBAN Preparation Guides available on Amazon, and the Bronze Bundle of CELBANPrep University.
- Cost As suggested above, at CELBANPrep University several packages are available. The books, that are available through Amazon, are a good starting point for people with a limited budget. Focus on one skill at a time. Next, there is a Bronze, Silver, and GOLD bundle available depending on your needs. Finally, one-on-one coaching is also available, sold separately. You can pay ahead and save, or access a payment plan.
Hopefully, knowing my qualifications, experience, availability, teaching style, and cost will assist you in making an educated decision on how to increase your chances of success while preparing for the CELBAN!
~Kim
