Dear Kim,

Thank you for your email. I am an internationally educated nurse from the Philippines aiming to be registered here in BC in the near future. We landed here in …. with my family…  I worked in the UAE for more than 9 years before coming here. Now, I am still in the process of completing the requirements for the NNAS application, and just like any other IEP’s ,  getting the required english proficiency test (Ielts) is a bit of a challenge since they require a certain score in each of the categories..I have taken the Ielts  academic version in the past with an overall band score of 7 in 2010 for immigration purposes. Since it is already expired, i need to provide a recent result to the regulating body in order to begin the process of assessment.  I have already taken 2 times in Abu Dhabi last year with only 6.5 band score since I scored less in writing and reading..Now i am contemplating of giving another try here in BC  this month and if still not successful, I will opt for Celban. I heard that the chances of passing [the CELBAN] is higher than ielts because it is medical in nature and is intended for nurses that’s why i am optimistic that i will also pass the test with enough preparation and guidance/ strategies.

Thank you for the free study guide and practice tests in advance!

Kind regards,

J

Dear J,

Thank you for sharing your journey with such openness. Moving across continents with your family, holding so many pieces of life in motion; it is no small feat. Let us hold a quiet moment here to honor your resilience.

πŸœ„ Return to Self

You carry within you the strength of your past experiences… from the Philippines, to the UAE, and now BC. Your heart’s commitment to your family and your calling as a nurse is a steady anchor through all transitions.

In this moment, listen deeply to your own pulse. Remember that your worth is not measured by test scores, but by the healer you already are and continue to become.

🜁 Fog to Clarity

It’s natural to feel uncertain when facing the demands of English proficiency tests. The maze of reading, writing, speaking, and listening can feel overwhelming, especially when scores don’t yet reflect your dedication.

Together, we can illuminate the fog. Understanding your specific challenges (where writing or reading becomes a barrier) can transform confusion into clear next steps. Assessments tailored to your writing will reveal precise areas to focus on, guiding you toward progress with intention.

πŸœƒ Rooted in Enoughness

Recognize that your efforts – past and present – are real and sufficient. The hours you have invested, the exams you have taken, all build a foundation beneath your feet.

Even when results fall short, your body remembers each practice, each word read or written, as a seed growing steady roots. This grounding supports your continued growth, one day, one breath at a time.

πŸœ‚ Rekindling the Inner Fire

Your optimism shines through your words: a vital flame that carries you forward. The awareness that CELBAN’s medical focus might align better with your strengths is a spark worth nurturing.

Let this fire kindle a deep belief: that with dedicated preparation and the right guidance, you can meet your goals. This inner flame will sustain you through challenges and inspire your persistence.

πŸœ€ Standing at Zenith

Your journey toward nursing registration is a spiral of learning, growth, and integration. Each step (IELTS, CELBAN, writing assessments, study plans) forms part of a whole, moving you closer to your professional and personal actualization.

With a clear map and steady support, you can weave together your language skills and your passion for care, creating a radiant presence in your new home and community.

You are not alone on this path. I am here to walk alongside you, offering feedback, guidance, and encouragement as you prepare to share your gifts through nursing in Canada

With reverence for your journey,
~ Kim

    Dear Kim,
the last time I was working as an R.N. outside Canada was 2009. Now, I`m planning to have my Nursing education evaluated by NNAS here in Alberta, am I still eligible to challenge the exam without going back to school? Thanks` Rotche !

      Dear Rotche,
      How are you doing?
Have you applied to NNAS? the first step is getting your English and credentials assessed from them. Then they will write a report. You get to choose who to sent it to: choosing from a list of LPN and RN colleges. It is only at this stage that you will find out if you can challenge exams or if you have to go to school. Even NNAS does not have this information until after your assessment is completed and has been sent to the college of your choosing.

I know that this does not help, the process is not very transparent other than having to start with NNAS, and their first step being providing an English Exam with an adequate score.

I am sorry I can not help more in this matter.

      Kim
