What Does Sociolinguistic Knowledge Mean?

Let’s start with the basics. What the heck does sociolinguistic knowledge mean, anyways? On one hand it means knowing how to speak with respect, on the other hand it means knowing when to speak and write formally and when to speak more casually. Let’s explore each aspect one at a time.

Speaking with Respect

When you’re talking to patients or their families, knowing how to be polite is important. For example, instead of saying “Give me that chart,” you might say, “Could you please hand me the chart?”

Are you able to speak respectfully, without overdoing it?

Formal vs. Casual Language

You need to know when to use formal language and when it’s okay to be more relaxed. For instance, when writing a report, you would use formal language: “The patient presented with symptoms of fever and cough.” But if you’re chatting with a colleague in the break room, you might say, “How’s it going? Did you see the game last night?”
