Thank you for your message.
There is a reason for your anxiety, and it is quite normal or even expected in your situation.
You are entering into an exam situation where your future is in the balance. Whether or not you get to proceed on the journey to becoming a nurse in Canada depends on the outcome of your exam.
If you do not get an acceptable score you will remain at this stage, spending more time and money to get to the next stage.
This creates a great deal of stress.
Your level of stress will increase based on how much you know about the exam, and how confident you feel about your competencies in the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. But it is more than that. You are also required to demonstrate competencies in the Canadian Culture and nursing in a Canadian context.
That is enough to cause anyone anxiety!
With your exam in 12 days, and you contacting me 13 days before your exam, I am pretty limited in what I can do to support you. There are free resources at http://www.celban.info. There are also reading and listening resources at http://www.celbanprep.info. These will give you an idea of what to expect on the exam, but they will not do much about increasing your competencies: it takes time to do that.
So then, what can you do to decrease your stress so you can sleep? The answer is in your attitude and perspective. If you allow me to shift it for you, you should feel better about it.
One of the blessings about the CELBAN, that you do not get with any other exam, is documentation of your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to writing and speaking. That is write, they will send you a document telling you why you did not get an acceptable score, what you need to improve, and what competencies need to be strengthened. Most people don’t understand the value of that, but I do. It empowers you. It gives you an idea of what your weaknesses are, and what you need to do to improve, so that you get an acceptable score, the next time: if you get quality training from quality coaches, and practice to overcome your obstacles.
Isn’t that great? I consider it a gift; and it is the one reason I teach people to prepare for this exam!
So, M, because this is the first time taking the exam if you approach it like an experiment, your stress levels will decrease. If you think about it as a way of determining your strengths and weaknesses, your competencies, a weight will be lifted off your shoulders.
Any time your stress and worries return, just remind yourself: this is an experiment and all will be well. Because, if you pass: Hurrah! But if you need more support, assistance, guidance or resources: I am here!
Then you have three new problems:
1. Allocating the funds,
2. Managing your time, and
3. Making time to practice.
But, if this is important to you, you will be able to solve each of those issues with ease.
So, M, as the date approaches: take a deep breath, encourage yourself with positive thoughts, and let the stress go.
You will live through this and one day you will be encouraging others to do the same!
