If I stick with this strategy [for CELBAN Writing] it will be easy

Dear Kim,

Thanks again for your response! I have a question kim, In future report, can I consistently use simple past or other simple tenses? I find that simple tenses is easier, and if I stick with this strategy it will be easy, im not sure about this just saying 🙂

Multiple Choice ExamDear G,

That is a good question. Do you remember what I said during the 7 Things You MUST Know to Pass the CELBAN  presentation about the reading and listening levels? How can you tell if you are reading a book at a CLB of 7, 8, 9? What are the differences in sentence structure and vocabulary? Study the differences between the local newspapers and the Canada Post or Financial Post. Look at the sentence structure and grammar. What do you observe? How about in these sentences:
  • Today I went down town. First I went to a store to look at scooters. I learned a lot. Then I went to a sport store. I looked at the kayaks. I got one. My friends helped me to bring it home. Then I went to dance. Ease of reading: 100%, Grade Level: 0.
  • This morning, after speaking with a friend, I went downtown. I checked out a motorcycle and scooter store to do some research on which one I should get. After that I went to an outdoors sports store where I purchased a kayak I had been eyeing and saving up for. Finally I had the money. I got a discount on: the PDF, the paddle, and the throw bag. My kind and equipped friends had a roof rack and helped me to bring it home. I ended the day with dance. Ease of Reading: 89%, Grade Level: 4
  • This morning, after speaking with a friend, I went downtown. I perused a motorcycle and scooter store to do some research on which one I should get. I learned about fuel injection, pistons, and stability. The heavier scooters have a greater stability, but the fuel consumption is greater. All are approved by the EPA and meet emissions levels for 2018! Subsequently I went to an outdoors sports and leisure center where I purchased a kayak I had been eyeing and saving up for. Finally I had the money. I got a discount on: the PDF, the paddle, and the throw bag. My kind and equipped friends had a roof rack and helped me to bring it home. I ended the day with dance. We had dances from: Israel, Greece, Taiwan and the Yemen. Ease of reading: 75%, Grade Level: 6.

Finally I had the money but I still welcomed the  discount on the following: the PDF, the paddle, and the throw bag. My kind and gracious friend had a roof rack ready to load the kayak and bring it home. I ended the day with dance. We had dances from: Israel, Greece, Taiwan and the Yemen. They included grapevines and Yemenites. Ease of Reading 70%, Grade Level: 7

What are the differences? What happens when you write a report with all your sentences having simple structure and all your verbs in simple past? What would you have to do to get a reading level to a higher level?

Kim
Dear Reader,
Please comment about each passage and the reading level scores. What about each paragraph increases or decreases the score? How does knowing this help you to prepare for the CELBAN when it comes to reading, listening and writing? How can you use this information in choosing appropriate study materials?
