When preparing for the CELBAN, you might first wonder about the cost. But before you dive into that, ask yourself:
โHow will you prepare me for the CELBAN? What specific skills will you teach me?โ
To truly understand their answer, you need to grasp what the CELBAN exam is all about. One essential skill tested is Organizational Knowledge: Textual Knowledge. This skill is about how well you can connect sentences and ideas so that your communication flows smoothly and logically.
Can it be learned in only a matter of days?
Letโs explore its significance through real-world scenarios to see how textrual knowledge can make a difference in medical situations.
Why Textual Knowledge Matters
Textual Knowledge is the ability to make your speech and writing clear by linking ideas together effectively. It involves two main concepts: cohesion and coherence.
1. Cohesion
Think of cohesion as the glue that keeps your sentences together. Using words like “and,” “but,” or “because” helps your ideas connect seamlessly. For instance, if you say, “I finished my rounds, and then I checked-in with the head nurse,” the word “and” connects the two ideas, making your sentence easy to follow.
In an essay, you might write, “I chose nursing because when I was taking care of my grandmother, I realized I was a natural.” The word “because” explains why you became a nurse, making the sentence cohesive and easy to understand.
It is important to note that textual knowledge and grammatical knowledge, alos being assessed on the CELBAN exam, go hand in hand. You MUST know how to correctly use puncutation when using cohesive devices!
2. Coherence
Coherence ensures that your sentences and ideas fit together in a logical order. Itโs like telling a story where events happen in the right sequence. For example, if you write, “First, I applied pressure to the wound. Then, I called for assistance. After that, the patient was moved,” your story is coherent because the events make sense and follow a logical order.
When writing an incident report, you would start by explaining who was injured, then describe what happened, and finally discuss the medical interventions Organizing your information in this order makes your report coherent and logically structured.
Can You do that in 10 Days?
Can you learn all that by taking tests over and over again?
Can you learn all that by taking a crash course for the CELBAN?
No. You can not. It takes time and practice with someone who can teach you how to write and speak with eloquence: coherence and cohesion.

Why Textual Knowledge is Crucial in Medical Contexts
Textual Knowledge helps you communicate your ideas clearly and effectively. Whether youโre writing an incident report, giving discharge instructions, or encouraging a coworker, using cohesion and coherence ensures that your message is easy to follow and understand.
In the CELBAN exam, being able to connect your ideas smoothly and logically is essential for demonstrating your organizational skills and clarity in communication.
The Question You Should Be Asking
So, when choosing a CELBAN course, make sure the teachers focus on helping you master these crucial aspects of writing and speaking. Ask, “How do you teach me how to add cohesion and coherence in what I am saying and writing?”
And, before I close, do you really think they can do that in a matter of days or even weeks?
It takes longer, much longer, to master textual knowledge.
And remember, textual knowledge is only one thing you are being assessed on during the CELBAN. When choosing a CELBAN course, make sure they teach you all 5 knowledges!
All the best,
Kim
