I am so worried in taking celban for the 3rd time…I got 9 listening

Dear Kim! I am so worried in taking celban for the 3rd time without attending celban prep… The ist time I took I got 9 listening,speaking8,writing8 and reading 7… The 2nd time I took I got 9 again in listening,9 in reading 6writing, 8speaking….now would be my last chance and I’m far enough to calgary to attend class review…I live in [town] and I wanted to improve my scores in celban…please guide me as I’m planning to take on feb…. Thanx

???????????Q,

How important is it to you to be a nurse in Canada?
How badly did you feel when you did not get the required scores on the CELBA, not once, but twice?
And how long did it take you to find the drive, motivation, will to continue on your path?
What do you thing will happen if end up with the same results again, and do not get the required score, but this time you know this was your very last chance, there are no more chances, and there is no other way to become a nurse in Canada…. that in not getting the required score on the third attempt your hopes and dreams of life in Canada are shattered?
Am I being overly dramatic, NO! I personally know two people who faced this very difficult situation. One nurse I met with for lunch, and even months after she had been delivered the news, she still choked up when we spoke about it. Another man had a job lined up for him, once he became an RN. All of his hopes and dreams were shattered. I have not heard from him since then.
If you felt bad after not getting the required score on your first and then second attempt, how do you think you will feel to do so on the third and final attempt?
DO NOT TAKE THE EXAM IN FEBRUARY!
DO NOT TAKE THE EXAM UNTIL YOU ARE CONFIDENT YOU WILL PASS ALL FOUR SKILLS!
You have amazing scores, and should be really proud of yourself, especially getting these scores without preparation. But as you have seen, just because you have an acceptable score at one sitting, does not mean you will get an equal or higher score on the next. In fact many people experience as you do, and get a lower score when repeating the exam!
What can I give you for hope?
I have created resources for writing and speaking that are extremely successful in preparing people for the exam. So I get emails from people telling me, that like you, they have passed writing and speaking but got a 9 in listening when they need a 10. So last year I spent my summer holiday creating a course for listening. It is Listening Skills for Internationally Educated Health Professionals, IEHP’s. It has over 50 tests in four different areas, and with four different levels. But, it will not be ready until the spring. So, while I know this is a long time to wait, and is not guaranteed to get you an acceptable score, you will be able to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses in listening.
So, Q, please DO NOT TAKE THE EXAM IN FEBRUARY!
DO NOT TAKE THE EXAM UNTIL YOU ARE CONFIDENT YOU WILL PASS ALL FOUR SKILLS!
Sincerely,
Kim

  1. Dear kim,
I tried CELBAN and my score was so bad I got 9 speaking, 9 reading,7 writing and speaking. I am planning to take it again but am afraid because I know I am not ready and am sure I’ll not make it again. By the way I am working as an LPN but I still want to get my RN if I have given a chance. I know that this is a combination of patience and hard work.
So what would you suggest for me to do in order for me to have a better chance to pass.
    A

    • Dear A,
Congratulations! What amazing scores you have for speaking and reading! This is most excellent. (Or is it reading and listening? You wrote speaking twice.) Either way, these are great scores. So are 7’s. What this tells me is that you have a strong background with the English language. All you need is some guidance on some test taking strategies. Like you said the combination of patience and hard work is essential. How much time do you have to study, each day? It is recommended you spend at least half an hour on each skill, but if you can’t do this then allow more time between now and your exam.

What I suggest is you go to http://www.celbanprep.info and find out more about the resources that are available to you. Then decide. If you can afford it, I suggest you get all four skills in bundles at once. But if you can not, buy one at a time. Definately start with the resources for listening and reading knowing that to complete CELBANPrep Writing there are two levels. Each is for one month, with two additional months each to work with your writing tutor. So it could take some time to feel confident in taking the exam.

I also recommend avoiding taking the exam too soon. You only have two chances left, and you will need one when your exam expires in two years so it is best for you to do all you can to ensure you pass this time.

      Thanks for your message,
      Kim
